Health and Beauty Aids

Health and beauty care products such as shampoos, nail products, deodorants, toothpaste, mouthwash, and hair spray account for many calls to the NJ Poison Control Center. These products are often stored in easily accessible areas for children and pets; bathroom counters, bedroom furniture and tables, purses, under bathroom sinks, closets and cabinets, inside vehicles, etc. Like all products, health and beauty aids have the potential to cause injury if ingested or splashed into the eye.

  • Follow directions on the label when using these products.
  • Read all warning labels.
  • Keep all products in their original bottles or containers.
  • Safely dispose of all unused products to prevent accidental exposures.
  • If using a new product for the first time, try it on a small area of your skin before applying the product to larger portions. This will help detect a sensitivity/allergic reaction.
